Some people have been wondering when Satan would make his return. The time is now.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the older series, Satan is Phoebe’s father. He was the president of McNiven University when Puck was a student. He is now unhappily retired. You know what they say about the devil and idle hands? Well it’s all wrong.

I thought that this comic would be WAY easier to draw than my usual ones, but I was wrong. Again. I decided to change Satan’s appearance from a simple silhouette to a more visually interesting version. That provided new challenges, but I felt that the flat black didn’t cut it with a full-colour strip anymore.

Next strip, Puck returns with a real shocking revelation – just in time for strip 100!

I find this series easy to follow and visually stimulating. The drama of the first panel grabs me. The uniqueness of the second gives me a reason to stick around and think about what's going on.

The third panel threatens redundancy - a closer close-up, or an extreme close-up would be better, I think, to make the blunt finish in the forth panel seem even more blunt. And I think it would be good form to keep the focus on the silhouette of at least one gnome, so that it can be immediately associated with what follows.

Makes sense. I felt that I didn't want to give another shot of the gnomes in panel three lest I blow the joke, but that sense of continuity might have helped. Oh well.

Yes. Continuity and emphasis in terms of visual communication. It's there in words. Now be as tight with it in pictures. Have it correspond in pictures. Make the story equally clear on both tracks.

This is not something I have any experience with or have aptitude for. But now that the inking is getting decent and I'm thinking about storytelling more, I'm starting to see how hard it is to tell the story visually. I'm learning to appreciate the logic in the paneling of those who do it well. The picture has to mean something - it can't just be a place to put in words.

If you watch a daytime soap opera without the sound (like when your waiting for a car repair) you can't tell what's going on from what you see. It's all talk. Very little visual communication of the script. TV in general is like that compared to Cinema (except for the A-Team).

Visual communication is becoming my new bug-a-boo.

Thank you for telling me about your nasal milkage. It makes me feel good that the joke works. Sometimes I do these comics and I'm riddled with self-doubt as to whether ANYONE will find the concept funny.

Whoa for a minute there I thought Puck was a part of the DC reboot!

Nah. No reboots here. Better! Darker! More 'mature!' I hate reboots.
