You know what's funny? In Brazil, the "knock on wood" thing is used exactly for the opposite purpose. Say, when you say something that might be translated as a bad omen (for example "if I get fired someday, it's game over for my income!" or "if I hit my car when I'm driving, well, I'll be joining the great majority!"). Whenever you predict a bad action in your life, you knock on wood to make sure it won't happen. So, in Brazil, this particular strip would've made a lot of sense — since Colin was traditionally knocking on wood to make sure that his baby won't ever be quiet as a mouse anymore!
