Phoebe Skyscraper Ad by ElectricGecko Phoebe Skyscraper Ad by ElectricGecko
So this is another take at a skyscraper ad. It has Phoebe wearing her (yet to be officially revealed) Howlers work outfit.

I'm aware it's shameless. I'm partially ashamed of its shamelessness and partially proud of it.

The last Puck ad I posted here on dA was criticized on the following counts:

1 - the ad gave people no clue what the comic was about

2 - the ad was not really funny or in keeping with the tone of the comic

3 - the ad had nothing going for it beyond a pretty girl

All of the above criticism was valid, but I didn't have any good solutions. So the new ad addresses NONE of the listed flaws, and instead takes said flaws and flaunts them like they're on a runway in Milan.

Ah criticism, lampooning it can be so refreshing every now and again.

Well, I actually value the criticism, but I often don't have the time or skill to actually FOLLOW the criticism.

The old no solution solution. So basically we just wasted our time and good intentions. Hmmm. Geckos.

Thanks. I try to walk that fine line of boobage that doesn't step over into creepy/nasty/alienating-to-female-readers territory.

You know, people comment on Gyno-Star's boobs all the time. And I'm like, "Have you ever actually SEEN a mainstream superhero comic? Because this is nothing."

I find the ridiculously distorted anatomies of many comic book females to be more than a little disturbing. I mean, the male physiques are exaggerated as well, but ... I really don't understand. I'm confused by it, really. I mean, I assume the ridiculous cup sizes are appealing to someone, but it looks so wrong to me, like some sort of horrible deformity. (Shudder.)

bah, criticism will follow wherever an artist goes! no matter what you do, some people will find something wrong with it. don't let harsh words speak louder than positive ones, my friend :aww:

Oh, it's not really harsh words! If I post something and put those infamous words, "What do you guys think?" below it, I know I'm going to get some negative reactions, and I'm glad that people are honest with me. Sometimes I take the criticism and improve. Sometimes I ignore it if I feel it's off-base. In this case, I really did want to heed some of the criticism because I felt it was valid, but I had NO idea how to achieve what people were recommending.

Oh well. Many of the people who didn't like the last one seem to like this one better. And here I was, thinking I was playing the same old game!

Well, it IS a rather big thought, pondering the essence of our surroundings. I mean, what is an orange, other than an orange? Perhaps, in Plato's eye, the orange in question approached the zenith of oranginess - approached the abstract essence of what an orange is. In that light, it's a brilliant thought.

The funny and surprising thing with Phoebe (that I myself discovered through many comics) is that she's actually pretty smart. It's just that her intense optimism and energy gives her the appearance of stupidity.

Well, Shakespeare had similar characters that had unique insight into the goings-on that the regular characters just lacked.

What this ad does have however is cleavage. Which at the end of the day will bring all the boys to the yard. Or so I'm told. =D

Well, thus far, this ad certainly is outperforming most others on an imprint per click ratio. I feel like the cleavage thing has been a little overdone in the wecomic ad department, BUT I feel like bucking the cleavage trend is kind of like trying to order roasted pheasant at Pizza Hut. People want pizza; I shall provide.

Despite the criticism it must be refreshing for people to have that kind of interaction, people must be pretty into Puck for them to have these opinions.

Alot of the time I feel people are too positive or afraid to offer criticisms.

However saying that, I really do like this and Phoebe is hot.

Yeah, I'm very happy to get feedback from people, especially when I ask for it. People are often positive, but I personally adhere to the "If you can't say anything nice..." rule on dA, which I think most people follow here. If someone asks me for feedback, I will give them minor constructive criticism, but even then, I'm pretty cautious.

I agree, I think DA is mainly a nice place, esepcially compared to some stencil webiste I first saw on the net which were bitchy, argumentative and in general put me off uploading my art onto any website.

I try to be honest but cautionary. I wish people were more critical of my art though, too many times I get one worded messages saying "Great" or something like that. I suppose the medium has somehting to do with it and your more likey to get feedback as you have characters that people can relate to etc.

Yeah, I TRY to give positive feedback that actually relates to the composition, though sometimes (especially when it's a medium I don't work in, like digital paint) I'm at a loss for words. It's so tempting to write, "WOW!" or something like that.

Feedback is certainly connected to medium. When I post something like a logo, I don't get many people saying much. If it's a Puck comic, then people feel some connection to the characters and want to comment on the events of the strip. VERY seldom do people actually comment on the art. Usually it's a comment related to the content. That's fine by me.

Isn't your comic strip mostly irreverent humor concerning a pretty girl with freckles? And a hot she-devil who wears fan-service costumes? Your ads ARE the comic, man!

I think I may pull that description and place it on the website. It sums up the comic perfectly. I'm glad that the ads deliver an authentic Puck experience. For whatever that's worth.
